BATTLES, Gerald D. of Winthrop, passed away at the Chelsea Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Chelsea on November 16, 2012. He was 81. He was the beloved husband of Eugenia M. (Sprague) Battles. Born in Wakefield, he was the son of the late Thomas and Margaret (Desmond) Battles. Devoted father of Desmond Battles and Nicholas Battles of Las Vegas, NV, and the late Brendan Battles. Dear brother of David Battles of RI, James Battles of FL, and Robert Battles. A Graveside Service will be held in the Puritan Lawn Cemetery 185 Lake St. Peabody at a date and time to be announced in the near future. Gerald was a U. S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. (Kinsella) Martin Sr. Devoted father of Heather J. Martin of VA. and Heidi J. Martin of LA. Dear brother of William J. Martin Jr. and his wife Christina of Tewksbury. He was a 1964 graduate of St. Dominic Savio High School in East Boston, received his Bachelor of Fine Art from the Rochester Institute of Technology/College of Graphic Arts and Photography, and received a Master’s Degree in Science from the Rochester Institute of Technology/College of Fine and Applied Arts. Don was a member of the Town of Winthrop Historical Commission and the Train Collectors Assn. He was a self employed cinematographer, and in 1981 received the Creative Excellence Award from the U. S. Industrial Film Festival for the film, Robots with Vision-URI Project. In 1988, he wrote, produced and directed a film chronicling the history of the railroad system in Winthrop, Ma. named, Recollections of Miss Elizabeth Burroughs, which is currently shown in the Winthrop School System. He arranged and organized to have historical plagues placed throughout the town to recognize historical buildings and places throughout Winthrop, including Fort Banks and the Winthrop Center Railroad Station.
